Qi Guan - VR Spatial Design

2020-2024

Introduction

Qi Guan is a VR spatial design work, awarded Excellence Prize at the VR Metaverse Digital Art Festival. It is structured on the traditional Chinese medicine view that organs correspond to emotions: the occurrence and development of illness is inseparable from the seven affective responses — joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear and fright. As the Huangdi Neijing states, "The five viscera transform the five qi, producing joy, anger, grief, worry and fear." The design maps these emotions onto organ-buildings in a virtual city.

Concept & Philosophy

"The heart is designed as a columnar translucent structure whose light flows with time, like blood circulating through a heart; the vessels are vessel-shaped buildings connecting the organ structures. Inside lies a maze without an exit: visitors choose a route according to their current state of mind, and each emotion appears differently in each organ. A full loop returns you to the starting point, yet you are no longer the person who stood there before — the space is a gift about emotion."
